Barbell Lunge

Traditionally speaking, barbells are generally used for squats, deadlifts and bench pressing.  In the video below you will see osteopath Heath Williams of Principle Four Osteopathy use the barbell when performing 2 different types of lunge exercises.

The barbell when placed across your shoulders with weights either side requires you as the individual to stabilise the torso and upper body.  Failure to do so when performing a lunge may result in you losing balance and therefore the barbell is a useful tool to train stability and control of the upper body whilst strength training the lower body.

Barbell Lateral Lunge

Barbell Posterior Lunge

For those of you who are looking to add some variety into your everyday lower body training routine, then try using a barbell when performing lunge exercises.  These can include anterior, posterior, lateral and rotational lunges.  The only thing that I ask you do is to make sure that you have adequate space around you to perform these safely and to choose a weight that allows you to perform the exercise through adequate range of motion.  Selecting a weight that is too heavy may result in your body naturally selecting stability over mobility and therefore you may not get the most out of training your body.
