Disc Injuries

Disc Injuries

Disc injuries more commonly occur in the cervical and lumbar spine.  Typically they occur in these regions of the spine because this is where they are generally placed under greater greatest strain.  Cervical disc injuries typically occur in the mid cervical region (C4/5) and lower lumbar region (L4/5/S1).  This is not to say that disc injuries cannot occur in other regions of the cervical, lumbar and thoracic spine.

Individuals with disc injuries can present to the clinic in a variety of different presentations.  In some cases, clients may present to the clinic and have imaging based diagnosis of disc injuries, yet have no signs or symptoms that would suggest otherwise.  At the other end of the spectrum individuals can present with acute or chronic disc injuries where clients present with numbness, weakness and referred pain.

Your Osteopath is trained to conduct a very thorough case history and examination and will refer your off for further imaging or medical opinion when they feel it is unsafe to treat you.  The vast majority of clients who present with disc injuries will benefit from treatment and management by the osteopath as they will be able to apply hands on manual therapy, postural exercises, taping and exercise and rehabilitation exercises to help.
