Eliciting Change Talk And Moving To Commitment Talk

As an osteopath working in private practice as well as the corporate consulting world, understanding what change talk is and how to elicit it with clients can be a very for those wishing to focus on improving their health and wellbeing.  Change talk is when an individual communicates advatages of change, disadvantages of the current behaviour, optimism of change as well as intention to change.    When we are working with individuals where we want to elicit change talk it is important to focus on the following:  Desire, Ability, Reason and Need.  Encouraging the individual to discuss why they might like to make a change, how they might go about making change, identifying reasons to change and understanding their level of need (how important) to change is a great place to start.  Once we have elicited change talk in the individual we want to then look to elicit commitment talk.  Commitment talk involves having them discuss what they are thinking about doing? what they are willing to do? planning to do and going to do.  Once we have commitment talk we can then look to evoke ACTION.
