Hip Bursitis

Hip Bursitis

Is a condition affecting the trochanteric bursa which is located on the side of the hip.  The bursa are small sacs of fluid which lie near where bone tendon passes over bone around joints.  When the bursa become aggravated they become inflamed and cause the individual to suffer from pain and discomfort.

Common signs and symptoms include:

  • Pain and swelling on the lateral side of the hip.
  • Referred pain down the leg can also occur.  Typically this occurs down the outside of the leg.
  • Pain when sleeping on the affected side.
  • Pain following sitting for prolonged periods.
  • Pain with activity that has been carried out for a prolonged time.

Diagnosis is typically made through the clinical history, observation and physical examination.  In some cases you will be referred for an ultrasound or MRI.

Typical treatment and management involves rest, ice, pain management through medication and avoiding aggravating and maintaining factors.  Hands on manual therapy such as osteopathy and physio can also help with symptoms and to improve mobility and strength.
