Before we start discussing KLT, let’s talk about traditional gym weight training. The majority of traditional gym exercises utilise isolation techniques. Isolation exercises focus on attempting to train one muscle or muscle group at a time, without the contribution of surrounding muscles. Isolation exercises are nearly always performed in single planes of motion and therefore tend to appear rather robotic in nature. Whilst this type of training can be effective in developing muscle mass, it does not translate into functional everyday activities and movement patterns.

In contrast, Kinetic Link Training (KLT) trains full body integrated movement patterns that can be considered to be more efficient and a highly effective approach to strengthening natural human movement in three dimensions. The aim of KLT is to enhance the ease of performance of daily tasks plus improve occupational strength and sports performance.

KLT exercises combine both upper and lower body movements to create an integrated whole-body exercise using multiple muscles and joints. As well as muscle strength, these exercise train internal stability, mobility, balance, proprioception and co-ordination.

A practical example to show the significance of full body training is to consider a baseball pitcher. A pitcher will gain significantly more power (speed of the ball) when integrating his whole body into the movement, rather than just standing up straight with his feet together while throwing the ball. This concept of the body learning to work as a whole extends to everyday activities such as lifting something off the ground or pushing the trolley in the supermarket.

KLT offers you a method of functional strength training which is a valid choice if you are seeking to achieve a great physique whilst treating your body with biomechanical respect. To learn more about Kinetic Link Training and how it might be able to benefit you, book in with one of our osteopaths today.

To all health professionals reading this, Wayne’s KLT course is a must attend if wanting to use functional strength rehabilitation training in your practice.
