Sandbag Push Press

The push press is a great exercise to incorporate into your training program if you are looking on developing overhead vertical strength and power.  As you can see in the video below, osteopath Heath Williams will drop into some flexion through his ankles, knees, hips and then explode out of this position to drive the weight (sandbag in this instance) overhead.  This allows him to recruit some of his lower body when performing this movement.

In addition to this exercise, the strict shoulder press is another great exercise that will focus more so on the upper body (shoulders) driving the movement.  When it comes to pushing movements (vertical and horizontal), remember it is also very important to balance out ones training program with pulling movements.  These can include and are not limited to:

Horizontal Pull Movements – Seated Row, Bent Over Row, Single Arm Dumbbell Row, Chest Supported Row.

Vertical Pull Movements – Chin Ups, Lat Pull Down.

Other Accessory exercises that should not be forgotten include: Face Pulls, Rotator Cuff Exercises etc.

When you are training a balance program is a must, whether you are training for performance, rehabilitation or recovering from an injury.
