Seated Trunk Rotation Assessment

Below are some videos of osteopath Heath Williams of Principle Four Osteopathy demonstrating two simple seated rotational assessment strategies that can be used to objectively measure the range of motion available with spinal rotation.

Seated Dowel Stick Rotation Assessment

Have the individual place the stick across the front of the chest and then sitting with the feet flat on the ground.  Ask the individual to rotate left and right and the degrees of rotation can be measured to assess ones range of motion available and compare left to right.

Seated Wall Trunk Rotation

Have the individual sit facing the wall and have them place their knees against the wall.  Whilst sitting have them slide their hand along the wall and measure the distance they can rotate.  The distance reached will give you an indication of the range of motion available and you can compare this from left to right.
