Single Leg Calf Raise

The single leg calf raise is a common exercise prescribed for strengthening the calf muscles.   In the video below you will see osteopath Heath Williams of Principle Four Four Osteopathy demonstrate a single leg calf raise off the box.  Performing the calf raise off the box or step allows the individual to drop their heel below the step or box and train the calf through a greater range of motion.

Typically a practitioner may prescribe a calf raise for the rehabilitation or strengthening of the calf following a calf muscle strain or achilles tendinopathy injury.  One would regress the single leg calf raise from floor level and then regressing further back from a double calf raise to single leg eccentric exercise.  One may look to progress their single leg calf raise through additional load, reps, sets and reduced rest periods.
