Sit To Stand Strategies For The Individual With Low Back Pain

When an individual has lower back pain (acute or chronic), often moving from sit to stand can be a major aggravating movement for the individual. In the video below you will see two basic progressions demonstrated by osteopath Heath Williams of Principle Four Osteopathy.  Video one shows a slow and controlled hinge movement through the hips whilst looking to maintain a neutral spine position and using ones hands to help offload some upper body weight.  Video 2 shows a progression on this by taking away the upper body assistance and using the arms to counter balance.  Both are good strategies to trial for those with back pain aggravated or maintained by getting in and out of a chair.  Whilst not in the videos below, another starting point would be to raise the seat higher (changing the hip to knee angle) by placing cushions on the chair to sit onto and using arm rests to allow for greater help from the upper body.
