Squat and Deadlift Variations + More

I was recently on the hunt for some articles on the squat and deadlift and came across this great article written by Strength and Conditioning Coach Martyn Girvan who currently works at Elite Sports Performance in Spotswood.

Now I am not sure when Martyn wrote the article, but having trained at Elite Sports Performance for the last 2 years and having seen some of these exercises being performed in the gym, it is finally good to see how they developed and why people are regularly performing these as part of their strength and conditioning program.

In the article Martyn describes the following squat and deadlift variations as well as a range of other great unique exercises for the upper body:

  • The Two Bar Goodmorning (am keen to try this one out for sure and will be interested to feel the different loading patterns that it creates).
  • The 6 way band squat exercise (having tried this myself on a few occasions, this is an absolute killer of an exercise and when you perform this exercise to time, watch out for some real sweating and post training exhaustion).
  • The Rat Trap (I am looking forward to trying this one out).
  • Bar Offset (this looks like a great exercise to develop control of the bar, but looks like you should start pretty lightly).
  • Plate Cable Row (looks like a great modified row for the back muscles).
  • The Bro Row (named after ESP biggest bench presser – Shaun Bostock).  Cannot wait to try this one out.

For those of you who are regular gym goers and you are looking to further develop your strength, then Elite Sports Performance is a great place to start.  Marty and the guys are very welcoming, easy going and always willing to help out with your technique.
