Squat and Reach – Working On Hip, Spine and Shoulder Mobility

The squat and reach exercise is one of my favourite exercises to include in ones movement prep for training or simply when looking to improve ones mobility through the big three areas (hips, spine and shoulders).  In the image below you will see one of Principle Four Osteopathy clients performing a squat and reach.  Those who will find this a challenge will be those who are generally stiff and tight in these key areas.  For the client who doesn’t have any mobility issues (or the hypermobile client) often I will alter the way they are performing this movement (especially the squat) so that they are actively having to hold a squat at 90 degrees rather than hanging all the way down the bottom so that it becomes more of an exercise focused on developing strength and control.
