Taking A Look At The Single Arm Kettlebell Overhead Press

The kettlebell overhead press is one of my favourite exercises for overhead strength work as it requires not only upper body strength, but also requires you to stabilise through your whole body due to the asymmetrical weight load. The neutral arm press movement is also preferred over the traditional military press position (elbows out wide position) as many of the clients who attend my practice often have shoulder related issues and are wanting to continue some form of press with less risk of irritating their shoulder.  In the images below you will see a couple examples of how one might compensate through their body when pressing overhead if they are perhaps pressing a weight that is either too heavy or are not maintaining tension through the body.  The goal is to keep the head neutral, shoulders stacked over hips and then over feet.  Too common errors include side bending through the head or a shift in ones shoulders or pelvis relative to one another.  Next time you are pressing, check to make sure you are maintaining a stacked and stable torso position.
