The Change Process:  Where Are You At?

The change process is something that interests me greatly as change is something that we all deal with on a day to day basis, whether it be with ourselves, our partners, our family, our friends or within a work setting.  In my case, within my osteopathy practice, within the corporate occupational health setting or whilst teaching at university.   Lets take the change process and ourselves for instance.  We can all relate to wanting to change something in our lives.  Now some people seem to manage making this change whilst others seem to battle forever with the idea of change and then others simply don’t succeed in changing.  What is great about the change process is understanding the stages of change and then looking at its importance and then the confidence and readiness one might have with regards to change.

The Change Process Model

No intention to change –> Ambivalence –> Possibility of Change –> Commitment to Change –> ACTION

When it comes to change and having made change, often many of us will have either discussed thoughts internally or perhaps discussed our thoughts externally and spent time within each of these stages.  As to how long we spend in each stage will differ greatly for all of us.

Key determining factors that may play a significant role in change is the importance of change relative to our values, our confidence levels with regards to change and our readiness to change.  Should we have a thought about change and the importance of change, confidence and readiness to change be high, it is likely that we will move through this process to arrive at ACTION.  For those who find the need to change to be important, but lack confidence and readiness, then often we might spend more time in the process of change as we look to build confidence and prepare for change.  For those who find the importance of change to be low and insignificant, we might find ourselves or those in the change process not changing.

Next time you are considering change or are working with someone who is considering change, think or have them think about where they might be at within the change process and the importance, confidence and readiness to change.
