Train Around Your Injuries and Keep Moving – An Osteopaths Perspective

All too often I see clients present to the clinic for the treatment of an injury and whilst this process occurs, they have stopped training. This results in an overall deconditioning of the body as well as often a drop in ones mood and overall feeling of wellbeing.  Rather than stop training altogether, I will often work with the client to develop a training program that allows them to re focus on work on other areas of the body.  Often this presents as the perfect opportunity to work on areas of deficiency, be it mobility, strength and movement patterns elsewhere in the body.  Take for example Matt who recently hurt his biceps in a muscle up.  Matt is able to perform push movements without aggravating his bicep.  Therefore we have dropped elbow flexion loaded exercises and pull movements that aggravate his bicep on the injured side (left side) and modified pull movements so that can perform bilateral pull patterns.  We also have Matt performing pull movements unilaterally (on the non injured side) and have prescribed a program to address his trunk/core and lower limb.  This means that Matt can still train 3-4 times per week and start to integrate exercise into his injured side as part of the rehab plan.
